Rescue Mission sees ‘significant’ increase in guests moving from shelter to permanent accommodation

ROANOKE, Va. – The Roanoke Rescue Mission provides homeless people with temporary housing.

Recently, the non-profit organization has seen a significant increase in the number of residents leaving the shelter and finding permanent housing solutions.

To help fill the void, the organization created a new program, After Care. It helps transition guests from shelter to permanent housing.

“I think it’s really beneficial for our clients to be able to have this holistic support beyond here, because they often feel like they’ve been let down,” said After Care Coordinator Natalie Kline.

Kline stands with residents on their journey to find permanent housing solutions.

“Just check in with them regularly to see how they’re doing, making sure they’re keeping up and progressing. It’s very positive. Guests who have moved are very excited to have that little extra support system beyond here,” she said.

In the past month, five people have moved from shelter to permanent accommodation.

During the transition, the rescue mission gives people welcome kits, which are baskets of basic necessities.

“Part of what we want to do is make sure these customers stay on track with their finances and budgets and don’t spend unnecessarily, so we provide basic things like toilet paper, plunger, brush toiletries, cleaning supplies, pillows,” Kline said. .

Each kit contains essentials that most people take for granted.

For those who have finally found a home, these supplies help get people started on the right foot.

“We want them to feel supported and loved and there’s nothing better than after I’ve gone and given them all these gifts that I can welcome home,” Kline said. .
