Frederick Appoints New Director of Volunteer Fire and Rescue Services – Conduit Street

Frederick County Director Jan Gardner this week appointed Deputy Chief Shane Darwick as Director of Volunteer Fire and Rescue Services. Darwick succeeds retired director Kevin Fox. The Director of Volunteer Fire and Rescue Services supports and coordinates with county volunteer fire and rescue companies.

“Shane’s knowledge, work experience, strong communication skills and work ethic make him the ideal candidate for the role of director,” said executive Gardner. “He is well respected by staff and volunteer companies, and has done an exemplary job as the Deputy Chief of the Volunteer Fire and Rescue Services.”

According to a departmental press release:

Mr Darwick joined Frederick County in 2019 as Deputy Chief of Volunteer Fire and Rescue Services, bringing 47 years of career and volunteer fire and rescue experience. He retired from the Montgomery County Fire Department after 35 years, reaching the rank of Battalion Commander.

Prior to joining Frederick County Government, Mr. Darwick served as the Training Center Director for the Carroll County Volunteer Emergency Services Association. During his career in the fire and rescue services, he has held several management positions, including with the National Capital Region Incident Management Team and the Search and Rescue Team. Maryland Urban Rescue Task Force 1.

He is nationally certified as an Emergency Service Instructor III and Fire Rescue Institute instructor at the University of Maryland. He received a Bachelor of Science in Fire Science from Columbia Southern University and a Professional Certificate in Emergency Management from Frederick Community College.
